Frank Boscoe’s most recent band the Gazetteers have a new album out on Jigsaw Records. You might already be familiar with Frank’s other bands Vehicle Flips and Wimp Factor 14. Original Tullycraft guitarist, Gary Miklusek, was also in the Pittsburgh based Wimp Factor 14. The new Gazetteers album is titled We Are Here and as always Frank showcases his terrific songwriting ability. I am a true fan. Today we have Monkees ’67 by the Gazetteers. You can order the CD here. It’s only $5.

On this day in 1979 a sixteen year old girl named Brenda Ann Spencer took a rifle that she had recently been given by her father for Christmas, and went on a shooting spree at an Elementary School in San Diego, CA. The school’s principal and head custodian were both killed. Eight children and a police officer were wounded. When asked why she had done this, Brenda shrugged and simply replied, “I don’t like Mondays, this livens up the day.” The fact that Spencer showed no remorse for her crime, and her full explanation for her actions was “I don’t like Mondays,” baffled singer Bob Geldof (The Boomtown Rats) and inspired him to write the song that became his band’s biggest hit. Today we have a live recording of The Boomtown Rats performing I Don’t Like Mondays.

On this day in 1962 the Ranger 3 space probe was launched to study the moon. The probe was designed to transmit pictures of the lunar surface to Earth but, due to a series of malfunctions the spacecraft missed the Moon by 22,000 miles. In the 80’s television series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, the opening narration to each episode stated that Buck Rogers was the pilot of Ranger 3, the last of NASA’s deep space probes. In the series the Ranger 3 was essentially a version of the space shuttle and looked nothing like the actual probe. Today we have Floating In Space by The Apples In Stereo from the album Travellers In Space And Time.
