In 1981 Flexipop magazine released a 3-track 7″ flexidisc by the Scottish new-wave band Altered Images. The disc included a short reworking of the group’s hit single “Happy Birthday” and a greeting from the band called Happy New Year. Enjoy. Have a terrific New Year’s Eve!

Mp3 of the Day

On this day in 1981 Vince Clarke quit the band Depeche Mode. Clarke had been the primary song-writer on the band’s debut album Speak & Spell, penning the singles “Dreaming of Me”, “New Life” and “Just Can’t Get Enough.” Clarke stated that he didn’t enjoy the public aspects of the band’s success, such as touring and interviews, and found himself frequently at odds with his band mates, particularly on the tour bus. Today we have I Sometimes Wish I Were Dead by Depeche Mode. This song was written by Vince Clarke and it appeared on the album Speak & Spell.

Tullycraft Tuesday

The last Tullycraft Tuesday submission of 2010 is a song we received just before Christmas. You may be familiar with the cover of “DIY Queen” this Massachusetts-based band contributed earlier this year to the Tullycraft tribute album Wish I’d Kept a Scrapbook. But today, Mastertrack has given us a new uptempo recording of The Lonely Life of the UFO Researcher. The original version of this song appeared on the Every Scene Needs A Center album. Who knows what the new year will offer up? Perhaps we’ll have more Tullycraft Tuesday installments in 2011? If you’ve recorded a Tullycraft song, or know someone who has, send it our way and we’ll feature it on the blog. Thanks!

The Twelve Days of Christmas – Day Eight

On this day in 2000 singer-songwriter, Kirsty MacColl was killed in a boating accident in Mexico. She and her sons were diving with a group in Cozumel, Mexico in a specific diving area that watercraft were restricted from entering. As the group was surfacing from a dive, a speeding powerboat entered the restricted area; MacColl was hit by the boat and killed instantly. In 1987 MacColl recorded the Christmas song “Fairytale of New York” with The Pogues. The song has frequently been voted the Number One Best Christmas Song of All Time in various television, radio and magazine related polls in Ireland and the UK.
