MP3 of the Day
On this day in 1991 Nirvana signed to DGC for $287,000. Less than two weeks earlier (on 4/17/91) they had played a show at the Ok Hotel in Seattle with Bikini Kill and Fitz Of Depression. Their set included an impromptu version of The Troggs’ “Wild Thing”. Today we have Wild Pack of Something by Iji. Happy Friday!

On this day in 1983 the film Valley Girl was released in 442 theaters across the U.S. The movie’s plot was loosely based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Songs by The Clash, Culture Club, Bananarama and The Jam were shown in the film’s closing credits, however, none of these songs actually appeared in the film. After the movie was completed, problems arose in acquiring the music rights and substitute songs had to be dubbed in. Altogether, the music rights cost $250,000 on top of the film’s original $350,000 budget. The planned release of a Valley Girl soundtrack album on Epic Records was cancelled due to the clearance problems with some of the songs, but in 1994 Rhino Records released an unofficial Valley Girl soundtrack. Today we have the song Johnny, Are You Queer? by Josie Cotton, which did appear in the film.

Tonight in Seattle
If you are looking for something to do in the Seattle area tonight (4/23) Three Imaginary Girls is hosting a listening party for the new album by the New Pornographers. The album hasn’t been released yet, so this is an opportunity to hear it in its entirety before the officially Matador Records release date on May 4. This happy hour event is taking place at Neptune Coffee (at 8415 Greenwood Ave N.) from 6p-7:30p, and it’s free! There will be 21+ drink specials and various giveaways such as pair of one-day tickets to Sasquatch for Monday 5/31 – the day the New Pornographers are set to play. If that wasn’t enough, Luke Burbank (the host of TBTL) will be hosting Arrested Development trivia starting at 8p. It’s almost too much fun for one evening! See you there. On this day in 1980, The Cure released their second studio album, Seventeen Seconds on Fiction Records. This was the only Cure album to feature keyboardist Matthieu Hartley. Robert Smith and Hartley had clashed over the complexity of his keyboard lines. Hartley enjoyed playing complex chords, while Smith wanted single notes. Hartley left the group after the recording of the album. Exactly one week earlier, (4/15/80) the band was playing the first of three shows at Hurrah’s in New York City. This was The Cure’s first trip to the United States. Their set-list looked like this:

On this day in 1980 Rosie Ruiz, age 26, finished first in the women’s division of the Boston Marathon. She was awarded a medal, a laurel wreath and a silver bowl. Ruiz was unknown in the running world and her victory raised suspicions because her time was then the third-fastest marathon time in history for a woman. After studying race photographs, Ruiz didn’t appear in any of them until the very end. Eight days later she was stripped of her victory after race officials learned she had jumped into the race about a mile before the finish line. It’s believed that she intended to jump into the middle of the pack of runners but miscalculated when she joined the marathon one mile from the end, not realizing she was ahead of the other 448 female competitors. Ruiz never explained why she cheated. Today we have the song Girl On The Run by Honey Bane.
Also, former Who’s The Boss star, Tony Danza and former Tullycraft guitarist, Harold Hollingsworth are both celebrating a birthdays today. Happy Birthday Tony & Harold!
