On this day in 1979 a sixteen year old girl named Brenda Ann Spencer took a rifle that she had recently been given by her father for Christmas, and went on a shooting spree at an Elementary School in San Diego, CA. The school’s principal and head custodian were both killed. Eight children and a police officer were wounded. When asked why she had done this, Brenda shrugged and simply replied, “I don’t like Mondays, this livens up the day.” The fact that Spencer showed no remorse for her crime, and her full explanation for her actions was “I don’t like Mondays,” baffled singer Bob Geldof (The Boomtown Rats) and inspired him to write the song that became his band’s biggest hit.
