MP3 of the Day
On this day in 1990 the Chicago White Sox played their final game at Comiskey Park defeating the Seattle Mariners 2-1. The White Sox had been playing at Comiskey Park since 1910. A new ballpark opened in 1991 and it was renamed U.S. Cellular Field in 2003. Today we have The 1910 Fruitgum Company by Helen Love.

American author Herman Melville, died on this day in 1891. Melville wrote the novel Moby-Dick which was originally misunderstood by contemporary audiences and critics. He died at his home in New York City at the age 72. Almost completely forgotten at the time, his New York Times obituary called him “Henry Melville”. It was not until the “Melville Revival” in the early 20th century that his work won recognition, most notably Moby-Dick which is often considered one of the greatest literary works of all time. Today we have the song Northern Whale by The Good, The Bad & The Queen.

On this day in 1967 The Doors played at the KRNT Theatre in Des Moines, IA. The performance occurred before The Doors had “caught on” in Iowa and the show was ill attended. Today we have the song Doors by Kids in the Hall alumnus Bruce McCulloch.

On this day in 1983 Minor Threat played their very last show at Lansburgh Center in Washington, D.C. They opened for the D.C. band Trouble Funk.

On this day in 1980 New Order performed at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ. Tonight at Maxwell’s Jenny and Johnny and Love As Laughter are both playing. Today we have a demo version of Ceremony recorded by New Order on September 7, 1980.

On this day in 1988 Billy Bragg released Workers Playtime, his fourth record but third full length album. I’m a big Billy Bragg fan and of all his albums this may be my favorite. Today we have a demo recording of Little Time Bomb taken from an expanded version of Workers Playtime released on the Yep Roc label in 2006.

If you don’t know already, the UK band Allo’ Darlin is playing in Seattle on Friday, October 29 at the Rendezvous Jewel Box Theatre. This venue is tiny and tickets are very limited so if are interested in going to this show I would suggest that you purchase yours asap! Happy Birthday Justine Frischmann! Justine is probably best known as lead singer of the UK band Elastica, and Damon Albarn’s (Blur) long term girlfriend (she and Damon split-up in 1998). In 1989 Justine was dating Brett Anderson and together they formed the band Suede. She left the band in 1991. In mid 1992 she and ex-Suede band-member Justin Welch decided to form a new group. After settling on the name Elastica they released their first single, “Stutter,” in October 1993. Soon after the release of their second album, The Menace, Elastica announced an amicable break-up in 2001. From 2002-2003, Justine collaborated with her friend and flatmate M.I.A. co-writing songs for her first album Arular. Justine moved to Boulder, Colorado in 2005, where she studied visual arts at Naropa University. She now lives in San Rafael, California with her husband, who is a professor at the University of California-Davis. Today we have a live recording of the song Vaseline by Elastica. This performance is from John Peel’s radio show on the BBC in August 1993.

On this day in 1994 Built To Spill released their second full-length album, There’s Nothing Wrong with Love on Up Records. In my opinion this is their best album, and I think a lot of people would agree with me. As much as this second album is loved, I think their debut album is somewhat overlooked. Today we have the song Nowhere Nothin’ Fuckup from their debut album, Ultimate Alternative Wavers released on C/Z Records in 1993.
