On this day in 2004 Ken Jennings was finally defeated by challenger Nancy Zerg on his 75th Jeopardy! appearance. Jennings had won 74 straight Jeopardy! games and $2,520,700 prior to this day. Today we have Game Shows Touch Our Lives by The Mountain Goats.

On this day in 1968 The Kinks released their sixth studio album The Village Green Preservation Society. The album was assembled from songs written and recorded over the previous two years, and it was the last album by the original quartet. Bassist Pete Quaife quit the group in early 1969. Although it failed to chart after its release, the record is widely considered to be the most influential and important album by The Kinks.

On this day in 1982 The Cure released the 7″ single Let’s Go to Bed in the UK. In the wake of Pornography, perhaps the darkest Cure album, Robert Smith wrote “Let’s Go to Bed” as a sarcastic reflection on pop music, but he disliked the song and was initially upset that it was released. Today we have an interview with Robert Smith talking about the single and an acoustic version of Let’s Go To Bed. Happy Friday!

English pop singer, Kim Wilde was born on this day in 1960 in Chiswick, West London. Wilde burst onto the music scene in 1981 with the single “Kids in America”, which reached #2 on the UK Singles Chart. At the time there was some controversy when she refused to perform live. After a few test performances in Denmark in September 1982, Wilde embarked on a full UK tour in October. Today we have The Muffs performing the song Kids In America. This version was featured on the Clueless movie soundtrack.

On this day in 1970 Luna 17 successfully landed on the surface of the Moon. The Soviet spacecraft carried a vehicle that roamed the Moon’s terrain and performed experiments. The Luna Program officially launched 24 spacecraft between 1959 and 1976, although more were launched. Those that failed to reach orbit were not publicly acknowledged at the time, and not assigned a Luna number.
Dean Wareham (from the band Luna) played in Seattle last night, where he performed an entire set of songs from the Galaxie 500 catalog (it was great). Today we have Hefner performing a cover of the Galaxie 500 song Oblivious.

On this day in 1984 Madonna released her second studio album Like a Virgin on Sire Records. According to author J. Randy Taraborrelli, “Every important artist has at least one album in his or her career whose critical and commercial success becomes the artist’s magic moment; for Madonna, Like a Virgin was just such a defining moment”. Since its release the album has sold more than 21 million copies worldwide and has become one of the best-selling records of all time.
