On this day in 1953 seventy-two percent of all U.S. households (forty-four million viewers ) tuned in to watch episode #56 of the sitcom I Love Lucy – “Lucy Goes to the Hospital. “ In the episode Lucy Ricardo, played by Lucille Ball, gave birth to a son – Little Ricky. Today we have the song Lucy by The Local Heroes.

The Swedish band Pillow recorded a number of songs in the 90s, but only released one 7″, a CD ep, and a single compilation track. The majority of their output never saw a proper release, that is until now. The indiepop label Jigsaw Records just released a 22-track collection that compiles the best songs from the band’s unreleased material titled Learning To Labour. Today we have Monday Suit by Pillow. The CD is available on the Jigsaw Records website – and it’s only $5.

On this day in 1948 Kentucky Air National Guard pilot, Thomas Mantell crashed his P-51 Mustang while in pursuit of a supposed UFO. The case marked a sharp shift in both public and governmental perceptions of UFOs. Previously, the media often treated UFO reports as silly news. However, following Mantell’s death public concern dramatically increased about the phenomenon. Today we have The U.F.O. Man by Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers. Happy Friday!

In 1981 Flexipop magazine released a 3-track 7″ flexidisc by the Scottish new-wave band Altered Images. The disc included a short reworking of the group’s hit single “Happy Birthday” and a greeting from the band called Happy New Year. Enjoy. Have a terrific New Year’s Eve!

On this day in 1981 Vince Clarke quit the band Depeche Mode. Clarke had been the primary song-writer on the band’s debut album Speak & Spell, penning the singles “Dreaming of Me”, “New Life” and “Just Can’t Get Enough.” Clarke stated that he didn’t enjoy the public aspects of the band’s success, such as touring and interviews, and found himself frequently at odds with his band mates, particularly on the tour bus. Today we have I Sometimes Wish I Were Dead by Depeche Mode. This song was written by Vince Clarke and it appeared on the album Speak & Spell.

On this day in 2004 Ken Jennings was finally defeated by challenger Nancy Zerg on his 75th Jeopardy! appearance. Jennings had won 74 straight Jeopardy! games and $2,520,700 prior to this day. Today we have Game Shows Touch Our Lives by The Mountain Goats.
