On this day in 1948 Kentucky Air National Guard pilot, Thomas Mantell crashed his P-51 Mustang while in pursuit of a supposed UFO. The case marked a sharp shift in both public and governmental perceptions of UFOs. Previously, the media often treated UFO reports as silly news.
