The Cat’s Miaow in a Spacesuit
The Cat’s Miaow was an indie pop band from Melbourne, Australia. They were a foursome that released a number of cassettes and records (roughly) from 1992 until 2003. I was always a big fan and their band name inspired the title of this song. The Cat’s Miaow would occasionally write really short songs (some under 30 seconds). This was my original intention for this song, as a sort of homage to them, but we got carried away and it clocked in at the lengthy 2:11.
The day we tracked “The Cat’s Miaow in a Spacesuit” Chris brought his Casiotone 405 to the recording studio. This 1983 full sized keyboard is pre-midi but it offers a fairly impressive array of internal sounds. Chris played along with Wayne’s kitschy drum beat for most of the song, but we ended up editing the keyboard to just a small section in the middle. Unfortunately, this is the only song on the whole album that features the Casiotone 405. Initially, Jenny and I attempted to record our vocals separately, but it didn’t sound right, so we ended up sharing the mic and tracking our vocals together. This was a much better approach. Also noteworthy in this song is Cori’s amazing melodica solo. He knocked that one out in one take! We were all super impressed.
