On this day…
On this day in 1963, Bob Dylan was slated to make his first national television appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. He had intended to perform “Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues,” a song he wrote lampooning the John Birch Society. During the afternoon rehearsal that day, CBS officials told Dylan they thought the song was unacceptable for broadcast and wanted him to play another. Dylan responded: “No, this is what I want to do. If I can’t play my song, I’d rather not appear on the show.” Then he walked out of the studio and didn’t return.
