On this day in 1967 Brian Wilson shelved The Beach Boys album Smile, which he referred to as his “teenage symphony to God”. Its non-release spurred decades of speculation over what tracks would have appeared, in what order, and how great the album may or may not have been. Brian Wilson released his own newly recorded version of the album in 2004. On March 11, 2011, Capitol Records announced plans to finally release the original Beach Boys version of the album, which will be titled The Smile Sessions, during the summer of 2011. Today we have a demo of the song Heroes And Villains by Brian Wilson.

On this day in 1971 Mick Jagger and Bianca Pérez-Mora Macias were married in a Roman Catholic ceremony in Saint-Tropez, France. Bianca was Mick’s first wife and the couple had one daughter together, Jade Sheena Jezebel Jagger. In May 1978 Bianca filed for divorce on the grounds of Mick’s adultery with model Jerry Hall. Bianca later said “My marriage ended on my wedding day”.

On this day in 1994 Weezer released their debut album (commonly referred to as the Blue Album). The record was produced by Cars front man Ric Ocasek and over the years it has achieved cult status. Tonight, on the seventeenth anniversary of the Blue Album, The Cars are kicking off their first tour in over two decades here in Seattle. Coincidence? Probably. Leslie Conway Bangs (aka Lester Bangs) died in New York of a Valium and Nyquil overdose on this day in 1982. Bangs was a music journalist who wrote for Creem and Rolling Stone magazines. He has been called one of the “most influential” voices in rock criticism. It was reported that he was listening to The Human League album, Dare, at the time of his death. Today we have the Tullycraft song If You Take Away The Make-Up, Then The Vampires Will Die If you listen close, you’ll hear a shout-out to Lester Bangs in the second verse.
