On This Day….
For the past five decades the annual Eurovision Song Contest has been one of Europe’s biggest cultural events. Every country submits a musical act and a winner is decided in an American Idol-style contest. On this day in 1974, a little band called ABBA won the event’s top prize for their home country Sweden. The song they performed was “Waterloo.” In 2005 Waterloo was voted the greatest song in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Updates from hiatus
On this day in 2009 Tullycraft played at the Crocodile in Seattle. This was our last show in the northwest before our self imposed hiatus and it’s officially been two years since we’ve played in our home town. It was rumored at the time that the band was taking a break to allow Chris more time on his goat farm and Cori more time with his adult book store. (Here is Luke Burbank discussing said rumor on TBTL). Tullycraft is still officially on a break, but there have been rumblings about perhaps writing and recording new music. Stay tuned.

On this day in 2003 Bunnygrunt recorded a song titled “Thugz Forevah” with St. Louis rapper Chingy. Initially, the song was intended to appear on the Bunnygrunt singles & rarities CD In The Valley Of Lonesome Phil, but the track was pulled from the project when Chingy signed with Ludacris’ Disturbing tha Peace record label. To this day, the song still remains unreleased.

On this day in 1967 the Beatles recorded the song “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” at Abbey Road Studios in London. The song would appear on the band’s eighth studio album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. In 1968 William Shatner released a cover of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” on his debut album The Transformed Man. In 2006 Q Magazine included The Transformed Man on their list of the 50 worst albums of all time.

On this day in 1963 the Beatles recorded their first album at Abbey Road Studios. They were all suffering from colds and John was losing his voice by the time they tracked “Twist and Shout.” George Martin was intent on capturing the band with a live vibe… the resulting tracks would be released in the U.S. as Introducing … The Beatles. National Punk Day
You may or may not know that today is National Punk Day. This is an un-official annual holiday that encourages everyone to dress like a punk rocker (i.e. Ramones, Sex Pistols, Clash). National Punk Day is always celebrated on January 31st (Johnny Rotten’s Birthday).

On this day in 1959 Coral Records released “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore” by Buddy Holly. It would be the last single Holly released before the plane crash that took his life on February 3, 1959. The song reached #1 in the UK on April 24, 1959 and remained in the top slot for three weeks becoming the first posthumous #1 hit UK chart history.

On this day in 1968 The Kinks released their sixth studio album The Village Green Preservation Society. The album was assembled from songs written and recorded over the previous two years, and it was the last album by the original quartet. Bassist Pete Quaife quit the group in early 1969. Although it failed to chart after its release, the record is widely considered to be the most influential and important album by The Kinks.

On this day in 1984 Madonna released her second studio album Like a Virgin on Sire Records. According to author J. Randy Taraborrelli, “Every important artist has at least one album in his or her career whose critical and commercial success becomes the artist’s magic moment; for Madonna, Like a Virgin was just such a defining moment”. Since its release the album has sold more than 21 million copies worldwide and has become one of the best-selling records of all time.
