On this day in 1897 the United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million (about 2 cents per acre). Today we have the song Alaska by The Softies.

On this day in 1987 Big Black and The U-Men performed at the Showbox in Seattle. I didn’t discover Big Black until after they had already broken up, but for a while there I was really into them. Sonic Youth, Joy Division, Big Black, and Billy Bragg were my favorites until I discovered Beat Happening. At which point, I found myself on an entirely new musical path that didn’t include many of my old favorites, except for maybe Billy Bragg. Occasionally I’ll hear a Big Black song on KEXP and it brings back fond memories. Today we have Heart Beat by Big Black. Happy Monday.

In light of the passing of Elizabeth Taylor it was brought to my attention that perhaps we should post the song The Lives Of Cleopatra. This song, from our second album City Of Subarus, was loosely based on the tangled lives of Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds, Eddie Fisher and Richard Burton. Elizabeth Taylor was a wonderful star and she will be truly missed.

On this day in 1997 the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired its very first episode on the WB network. The show enjoyed a cult following and ran until 2003. On September 17, 2006 the WB network ceased operation. On that day they would re-air the first episode of their “most memorable series”…. Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Today we have LA Tool & Die preforming If You Take Away the Makeup (Then The Vampires They Will Die) from the Wish I’d Kept A Scrapbook Tullycraft tribute album.

If you were in London on this day in 1980 you could have seen The Cramps & The Fall at Kings College, Crass at the Moonlight Club, UB40 at The Venue or The Cure at the Marquee. Today we have a demo version of Fire In Cairo by The Cure.

On this day in 1995 Oasis performed with Velvet Crush at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ. On August 28, 2009, a fight between the Gallagher brothers broke-out backstage at a festival near Paris, which resulted in Liam breaking Noel’s guitar. Two hours later a statement from Noel appeared on the band’s website writing: “With some sadness and great relief…I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer”. Today we have Live Forever by Oasis.

On this day in 1984, the Thompson Twins single “Hold Me Now” entered the US Top 40. It was the first single from the British band’s fourth album Into The Gap, and it eventually became their highest charting hit reaching #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Today we have a sloppy version of Hold Me Now by Tullycraft. This was recorded many years ago in a single evening in Chris Munford’s living room. Apologies in advance.

The Pooh Sticks are performing tonight at Bush Hall as part of the London Popfest. I would love so much to be at this show. The Pooh Sticks are one of my favorites and I’ve never seen them play. Today we have a live recording of Sex Head by The Pooh Sticks. Enjoy!
