On this day in 1980, Simon Le Bon auditioned to be the singer of Duran Duran. He showed up to the audition wearing pink leopard skin pants. Simon and the other members had a discussion about their favorite bands, and they played an early version of “Girls on Film” for him. They found that one of his poems, “Sound of Thunder” fit almost perfectly on top of an instrumental they had on tape, and they agree to let him be in the band for the summer. Today we have a live recording of Rio by Duran Duran performed in NYC in 1982.

On this day in 1977, the legendary actress Joan Crawford died of a heart attack in her New York City apartment. Less than two years after Crawford’s death her adopted daughter Christina published the book Mommie Dearest, in which she alleged that her mother had been emotionally and physically abusive to both she and her adopted brother. The book was later made into a film, starring Faye Dunaway as Crawford. Today we have the song Mommi I’m A Misfit by The Tragics. Happy belated Mother’s Day!

On this day in 1983 the film Valley Girl was released in 442 theaters across the U.S. The movie’s plot was loosely based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Songs by The Clash, Culture Club, Bananarama and The Jam were shown in the film’s closing credits, however, none of these songs actually appeared in the film. After the movie was completed, problems arose in acquiring the music rights and substitute songs had to be dubbed in. Altogether, the music rights cost $250,000 on top of the film’s original $350,000 budget. The planned release of a Valley Girl soundtrack album on Epic Records was cancelled due to the clearance problems with some of the songs, but in 1994 Rhino Records released an unofficial Valley Girl soundtrack. Today we have the song Johnny, Are You Queer? by Josie Cotton, which did appear in the film.
